AI Code of Ethics
Last updated:
We believe AI should help people think more deeply, engage with different perspectives, and develop their own abilities. These principles guide our decisions and our use of AI.
1. Put human learning first
Use AI to strengthen critical thinking, curiosity, creativity, and human connection. Preserve the intellectual effort through which people learn.
2. Respect human judgment and agency
Use AI to support informed decisions while preserving human oversight, responsibility, and choice.
3. Pursue fairness and inclusion
Respect differences in identity, background, language, ability, and perspective. Work to identify and reduce bias, and judge reasoning on its merits.
4. Protect privacy
Treat personal information with care. Limit its collection and use to clear, appropriate purposes, and respect people’s interests in how their information is handled.
5. Be transparent and honest
Communicate clearly about the role of AI, its limitations, and our practices. Make claims that evidence supports, and acknowledge uncertainty.
6. Encourage open and respectful dialogue
Support thoughtful disagreement and the exploration of different viewpoints. Uphold people’s dignity while encouraging ideas to be questioned and examined.
7. Keep improving
Revisit our assumptions as technology, evidence, and people’s needs evolve. Let feedback and careful evaluation guide responsible improvement.
