Soapbox is a real-time debate platform operated by Soapbox Technologies Inc. (“Soapbox,” “we,” “us”). This policy describes the information we collect and how we use it. As the product evolves, we’ll update this page.
Information we collect
- Account information: your email address. Accounts are created with an email address and password.
- Profile information: any profile data you provide (username, display name, and avatar).
- Debate activity: records of the debates you take part in and the assignments and topics assigned to you.
- Audio recordings:we record each debater’s audio during live debates for the sole purpose of generating a transcript. We delete the recording once transcription is complete.
- Transcripts: recordings are transcribed to text, which we retain as a record of the debate.
- Classroom data: when Soapbox is used in a classroom, teachers create classes and assignments and invite students by email. We store enrollment, participation, transcripts, and grades and feedback, including any optional peer praise students submit after a debate. Some students may be minors.
- Technical data: standard server logs (IP address, browser, timestamps) used to operate the service and prevent abuse.
- Usage and diagnostic data: where product analytics are enabled, we collect pseudonymous records of feature use, page routes with record identifiers removed, performance measurements, and error reports. We do not include debate content, transcript text, written feedback, names, email addresses, or session recordings in this analytics data.
How we use information
To operate the platform: pairing debaters within assignments, running live debates, transcribing recordings, and securing accounts. Transcripts are analyzed by AI to score debates and provide feedback. A student may optionally submit named praise to their debate partner; submitted praise is visible to that partner and the classroom teacher. In classrooms, we give teachers access to their students’ debates, transcripts, grades, and submitted peer praise. We use contact submissions to respond to your inquiry. We use pseudonymous usage, performance, and error data to understand adoption, improve reliability, and diagnose problems. We do not sell personal information.
Service providers
We rely on trusted third-party service providers to operate the platform—including hosting, database and authentication, live audio, transcription, AI evaluation, email, and, where enabled, product analytics and diagnostics. These providers process information on our behalf and are bound by confidentiality obligations.
Students and schools
When Soapbox is used for classroom debate, the teacher directs how their students’ data is used within the platform. Teachers can access their students’ debates, transcripts, grades, and submitted peer praise. AI-generated grades and feedback are personal to the evaluated student and become visible according to the teacher’s release settings. Optional peer praise is different: it is submitted by name and is visible immediately to the debate partner who receives it and the classroom teacher.
